I just read an article dated May 15, 2007, that certain elements of the Iranian parliament want to talk to the U.S. Congress. I am a little skeptical; however, it is interesting. The way I see it there can only be three reasons for this sudden change in diplomatic relations:
1. Iran is scared that we are about to take some kind of military action along the border with Iraq. This could have an effect with the more moderate groups within Iran who want to get rid of the existing radical-run government. Therefore, they want to open a dialogue and possibly shut down any future military action.
2. Iran has seen the newly elected Democrats in Congress in action. They have also seen a change of attitude in France and Europe. Iran therefore believes they might obtain an edge in future negotiations by talking to a more liberal U.S. Congress.
3. A more sinister reason, they want to "lull" us into believing they are sincere. Iran in turn, starts some type of drastic military action (i.e., a major movement of Iranian troops into Iraq, large-scale Iranian sponsored terrorist strikes against U.S. interests in the Middle East, etc.).
That they are truly sincere, would be unbelievable to me. If there had been a major revolution in Iran, with moderate forces gaining control, I could believe their sincerity. Otherwise, they want us dead, just like Israel.
