On Sunday, May 25, 2008, former President Jimmy Carter said Israel has an arsenal of 150 nuclear weapons. The former president was speaking at a literary festival in Great Britain. Fox News reported that Israel’s former military intelligence chief, retired Maj. Gen. Aharon Ze’evi Farkash, warned that Carter’s remarks could encourage Iran to accelerate its development of nuclear weapons.
Most estimates by military experts have put the number of Israeli nukes at between 100 and 200. What was unclear is whether Carter, in stating the size of the Israeli arsenal, was drawing on U.S. intelligence he would have been privy to while president.
Carter "is not the first and he won’t be the last to talk about this," Farkash said in an interview to Radio Israel. "He saw fit to say things which I think weren’t that responsible. He was a president a long time ago, and these kinds of things could do damage, but on the other hand, it could enhance the deterrent."
My take on this whole affair is that the former president is senile. If he is not senile, than this mis-statement is a horrible breach of trust. No other president in history has spoken about the "intelligence" and information he had while in the Oval Office. But what else would you expect from some one who got scared of a bunny?
